The gorge of Asopos

A special site, of particular beauty, in the center of the land of Fthiotis, and of Greece. A narrow pass, formed by the huge vertical slopes of Oiti and Kallidromon. A gorge which leads the waters of Eastern Oiti to Sperchios River and then to Maliakos Golf, thus forming an hygrobiotope of great ecological importance.
The gorge is known since Ancient times. At its end, at the slopes of Oiti and Kallidromon NE of the Sperchios Valley, was the ancient town of Irakleia (Trachina), one of the 5 towns in Achilles' kingdom.
In the center of the gorge, towards Oiti, "Kouvelos" dominates, at its peak there was an ancient site. The maginificent path leading under the rail bridge of Papadia and ending to Asopos bridge, at the end of the gorge, lasts approx. 5 hours.
The best season to cross the gorge is the summer and September. Then the waters lessen. Otherwise, they reach a height of one meter, so visitors have to wear their swimming suits.
